We offer a monthly program for the general public. These programs have a specific theme for the evening as well as a period for investigating the seasonal constellations and planets. Public programs are held the third Sunday and fourth Thursday of each month. Next showing is Sunday, May 18, 2008 at 2 pm and Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 7 pm. The program will be "The Secret Of The Cardboard Rocket".
The Secret Of The Cardboard Rocket
		What is the secret of the cardboard rocket? Two young adventurers, Marcus and Bonnie, turn an old cardboard box into a rocket and, after assembling all their supplies, blast off on an awesome adventure to the most amazing places in the solar system. They visit each planet in turn and learn a little about what makes each planet unique and what makes earth such a special place to live. A great show for kids and adults, featuring 360 degree imagery and surround sound. Gasp in amazement at the huge planet Jupiter, find out what Saturns rings are made of and discover for yourself, what the secret of the cardboard rocket actually is.

Drake Planetarium is now open for the public one evening a month, offering fascinating glimpses into the wonderful world of astronomy and space science.  Each monthly program is divided into two parts: 

1. The first section covers a particular topic of interest, for example, the Mars Lander, asteroids and near Earth collisions, the International Space Station, and the like. 

2. The second part is always an introduction into the nighttime sky.  Each person is given a free sky chart. 

After learning how to use it, they are then taught to recognize the major constellations and planets visible at that season of the year
