Drake Planetarium Public Programs

(Times - 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.)

We offer a monthly program for the general public. These programs have a specific theme for the evening as well as a period for investigating the seasonal constellations and planets.

Public programs are held the third Wednesday this month. November's program is "Celebrating 400 Years of Astronomy!".

Celebrating 400 Years of Astronomy!

This program features striking images as seen by all three of NASA's Great Observatories: the Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, and Chandra X-ray Observatory.

NASA's Great Observatories represent the crowning achievements of astronomy four centuries later and are honoring this legacy with a spectacular national image unveiling. Drake Planetarium is one of only 30 Planetariums nationally chosen by NASA to receive and display the images to the public.

These images provide both stunning beauty and a wealth of scientific information that could not have been dreamed of by Galileo. Find out interesting facts, like why Cassiopeia A, a supernova in the Milky Way, acts like a pinball machine, or how stars and black holes are formed.

Drake Planetarium is open for the public one evening a month, offering fascinating glimpses into the wonderful world of astronomy and space science.  Each monthly program is divided into two parts: 

  1. The first section covers a particular topic of interest, for example, the Mars Lander, asteroids and near Earth collisions, the International Space Station, and the like. 

  2. The second part is always an introduction into the nighttime sky.  Each person is given a free sky chart. 

After learning how to use it, they are then taught to recognize the major constellations and planets visible at that season of the year
